Choral Faculty

Terry Hicks is in his twenty-fifth year as Director of Choirs for the Bentonville Public Schools, his ninth year directing the church choir at First Christian Church, Bentonville, and his fifth year as the director of the SoNA Singers.  Terry holds a Bachelor of Music Ed. from Ithaca College and a Master of Music Ed. from the University of Arkansas, and has performed with the Robert Shaw Festival Chorus in Carnegie Hall.  Under his direction the choirs at B.H.S. have consistently earned superior ratings at regional, state, and invitational festivals.  His choirs have been invited to sing for many prestigious events including: the Arkansas State Music Convention four times, the National High School Choral Festival at Carnegie Hall by the Weill Music Institute, the Southwest ACDA Convention twice, the ACDA National Convention twice, and an invited performance for Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.  The B.H.S. choirs have toured Ireland, Austria, Germany, New York, Minnesota, and Texas participating in workshops with Geoffrey Spratt, René Clausen, Anton Armstrong, Stan McGill, and Jerry McCoy.  In addition to other duties Terry also teaches AP Music Theory.  He was awarded the Distinguished Director Award by ArkCDA in 2001 and a second time in 2005.  Terry is a past region chairperson for the Northwest Region of ArkCDA, a Past President of Arkansas ACDA, and an active clinician.  Terry and his wife Peggy have two children, Katie and John.

Ken Griggs

Kayla Abernathy is in her twentieth year of teaching; eighteen have been in Arkansas, one in Texas, and one in Mississippi. She is in her thirteenth year as a Choral Director at Bentonville High School, in Bentonville, AR. Kayla holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree, with an emphasis in Secondary Choral Music Education, from Ouachita Baptist University. She is an active adjudicator and clinician for the state of Arkansas, has led numerous sessions at Arkansas’ American Choral Directors Association Reading Clinic and Convention, has been chosen to be the All-Region Conductor/Clinician in almost every region in Arkansas, and has been chosen to direct choirs in association with the Arkansas Choral Connection, Inc. While in Little Rock, Kayla’s select choir was chosen as one of six choirs to represent the United States in the 2000 Gloucester Choral Festival in Gloucester, England, where they received high honors. In Bentonville, Kayla directs several choirs, and teaches Music History, Music Theory, and private voice. Her choirs have received Superior ratings on the region and state level, and received the top Gold award at the Heritage Music Festival in Dallas, Texas. For eight years, Kayla was chosen to be Vocal Director at the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale for their summer musicals, and last summer was the Production Director. Professionally, Kayla was the Registrar and Secretary/Treasurer for four years for the Arkansas Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, she is the Past Region Chair for the North West Region, and the current Repertoire and Standards Chair for Women’s Choirs for the South West Division of American Choral Directors Association, as well as an active member of the American Choral Directors Association. Recently, Kayla was honored to be named NW Region Distinguished High School Choral Director of the Year in Arkansas. She and her husband Jeff live in Bentonville and have three children, Kelsey, 21, Drayton, 17, and Meredith, 17.
